Theater camp performance Friday

Hualalai Academy recently hosted its fourth annual musical theater summer camp. The hands-on experience was open to all West Hawaii youth and focused on the rehearsal, creation and production of a professional style musical theater play. Each student actively participated, under the guidance of mentors, in acting, singing, dancing, costume, scenery, and prop construction.

A performance by campers will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Hualalai Academy’s Bridge Building. Admission is free and open to the public.

College fair slated June 20 at HPA

Twenty-five colleges and universities will be represented at the Summer College Fair hosted by Hawaii Preparatory Academy from 12:30 to 4 p.m. June 20 at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center. The free fair is open to the public.

Lunch and orientation begin at 12:30 p.m.; the college fair runs from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Represented institutions include: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Bowdoin College, Brown University, Carleton College, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Franklin & Marshall College, Hanover College, Johns Hopkins University, Kenyon College, Lawrence University, New York University, Occidental College, Reed College, Swarthmore College, University of California Irvine, University of Hawaii at Hilo, University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, University of Rochester, University of Southern California and Whitman College.

Sessions on financial aid, writing the college essay and competitive admissions follow the fair at 2:45 and 3:30 p.m. A special session is planned for teachers and school counselors on writing effective letters of recommendation.

The college fair is presented by College Horizons in partnership with Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, University of Rochester and University of Southern California.

College Horizons is a college access, summer residential program for Native Hawaiian, American Indian and Alaska Native students.
